Y: The Last Man, Book 1 (The Deluxe Edition) by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra - Review

❋ ❋ ❋

For an unknown reason, all men around the world died, except that is for Yorick and his pet Capuchin monkey. Yorick and Ampersand are the last two surviving male mammals on the face of the Earth. Yorick needs to learn as much as he can about the plague if he wants to save mankind and find his girlfriend on the other side of the world.

I've read quite a bit of dystopian, but Vaughan handles this particular "what if" in a unique, inventive, and believable way. His take on the world with approximately half of the population left alive is a quite a thought provoking one. I liked seeing so many possibilities as to how the remainder would pick up after. For the most part, I enjoyed reading from Yorick's point of view, even if he could be a bit of a jerk because he's really quite funny and some of his dialog is great.

Since this is a graphic novel, I obviously have to talk about the Pia Guerra's art. I really enjoyed the style and color of the illustrations. The visual style of the graphic novel really suits and complements the tone of the story. In this case, the art is fully able to propel story in its own right.

If you are a fan of dystopian/ post-apocalyptic sci-fi, Y: The Last Man is a must read. I'm looking forward to continuing this series and reading more from Brian K. Vaughan.

I read this graphic novel from April 9 - 10, 2015 and my review is also on Goodreads.
